Attention Racers, Fans and Sponsors

This past week was a sad one in the racing community.  We lost a dear lifetime friend of CCD this past week, Minerva Evans lost her long battle with cancer on Sunday the 10th.  She was known in many ways around CCD
for many years.  Her husband Ray was a long time racer, she was a former track champion in the Powder Puff class, ran the concession stand for years, and was a friend to all who knew her.  Her daughters Cindy and Clatie raced the first Jr Dragsters at CCD, and her son Warren is a past owner and longtime announcer at the famed 1/8th mile.  Minerva was also responsible for the first Teddy Bears that were given to racing accident victims through DRAW, as she hand made many of the first ones.  She wore many hats and did many things in her time with us, and I am very proud to have called her my friend.

Ron

Dallas Montgomery, who for years has been the Hoosier Tire rep out of the Indy office and this past season was the operator  of Action City Dragway in Terre Haute passed away last Friday.  To his former customers, family, racers and friends we at Coles County Dragway send our deepest condolences and wish his family
all the best in this time of need.

Happy Thanksgiving All

Terry and Tie, Jim and Tammy, and Cathy and I all got to send some holiday cheer out on Saturday morning with the delivery of some Turkey Food-Baskets to some needy families in the area.  The baskets were purchased with the money raised thru the proceeds of the sale of raffle tickets from the quilt that Tie made
from the National event  T-shirts.  Nearly 20 families were given a complete Thanksgiving dinner, complete with a Turkey and all of the trimmings.  We would like to thank all of the racers who bought the raffle tickets, and would also like to thank My Store in Mattoon for helping us out with this project.  I have already given Tie another batch of T-shirts to use for next years quilt, so we look forward to doing it again in 2008.

Attention US Army Street Legal

Beginning this weekend, July 27th, anybody who has already qualified for the US Army Strong street legal season ending shootout will not be allowed to compete in the weekly shootout.  We have had people who have already qualified win or runner-up the last three weeks, and we have decided that this is unfair to the rest of the competitors trying to get in the show.  If you have already secured a spot, you are still welcome to come out to practice in the regular street legal format, but can't compete in the weekly US Army Strong Shootout.

Attention Racers

Cathy and I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every racer for attending our race festivities this weekend.   We had great car counts, great weather and some great racing action.  There were many racers who either don't attend CCD on a regular basis or who haven't been here very much, and we tried to thank each and every one of you for coming.  If we missed you, I apologize and hope to get to visit with you next time you are at CCD.  A big thanks to Jason Bailey and Craig Minor from JC Cars for all that you've done in helping us get this race put together, and for the door prizes for Crazy Cash.  We would also like to thank Jim Hooper for working the staging lanes this week while Ken was on vacation. It is a very tough job on a regular basis, let alone on a 3 day weekend where he had to deal with over 500 cars in that time.   Also, to everyone who helped on all of the cleanups, as we went thru more rice hull on this past weekend then we had all year combined. As I often say, we couldn't do this without all of you, and we really appreciate each and every one of you for attending Coles County Dragway USA.

WOW!!!!

If you missed the 2007 version of Thunder on the Prairie, then you missed quite a show!  It was loud, it was bright, and it was ON fire.  We sent the Police Interceptor Jet Funny Car down the track with the lights flashing and the burnout fence flying!   Not only did he put on a great show in the Jet, but the Nitro dragsters, Jerry Dronenberg in his Blown Altered, the doorslammers of Judd Coffman and Fred Somers, and the dragsters of John Tilford, Al Peavler and Mark Hopper all made it a show that was unbelievable.  Cathy and I would like to thank all who participated, all who came to watch, and all of those who helped put it all together!

Notice to Racers of a Rule Change

Last week over 100 racers in attendance were given the option of double buy backs instead of 1st or 2nd round.  In an overwhelming vote, it was decided that up to 40 cars in Pro/Super-Pro that we will now have double buy-backs, time permitting.  We will still have double buy-backs if there is 30 cars or less in either, but we will have doubles up to 40 cars time permitting.  Over 40 cars in both classes will result in only 1st or 2nd round buybacks only.

Attention Racers, Fans and Sponsors

Cathy and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who showed up this weekend for the US Army Street Legal Series on Friday, and those of you who also showed up for the busy night of racing on Saturday.  We had an awful lot on the schedule this weekend, and it was our biggest turnout of the year.  Even with all of the events we had going on Saturday night, we were still done with the race just after 10:00 PM.  We know that most of you understand that the great show of racers and fan support is what we need, and I just wanted to let you know that we sincerely appreciate the effort that the racers and fans put forth, and it makes all of the effort that we and the staff are giving you all worthwhile.  Thank you all very much.

Attention Racers

As hard as we tried this weekend, mother nature didn't want to cooperate with us.  On Saturday, we got the King of the Track down to just 8 cars before it rained, and we intended to finish it off on Sunday morning.  When we got washed out on Sunday, it pretty much put a damper on the weekends festivities.  So, we are now forced to split up the payout for the remaining cars on Saturday, and we are going to reschedule not only the Hopper Family Racing Classic from Sunday, but we will also re-run the King of the Track NHRA Wally race.  We are sending checks in the mail for the participants that were still in on Saturday.
We are going to reschedule the Hopper Family Classic for June 9th, and we will now run the NHRA Wally King of the Track race on Sunday July 15th.  I sincerely apologize to all competitors who were still in action.   We felt that this was the only way to handle it, as the logistics of getting all 8 competitors together on the same date/time could prove to be a hassle.  Please make a note of the new race schedule changes.

Attention Racers, Fans and Sponsors

Are you Army strong?  You need to be.  The US Army has signed on as a track sponsor for the 2007 racing season.  This deal has been in the works for about a month and has now come to reality.  The US Army has signed on as the Title sponsor for all of this seasons Street Legal fun nights.  Beginning with the June 22nd street legal night, we will have an 8 race series for street legal cars, with the winner and runner-up for each of those 8 races coming back for a 16 car shootout on the last race August 17th.  Beginning with the first street legal night this Saturday, we will now refer to all of our street legal nights as the US Army Street Legal Series. The 8 race series will be similar to the format of the popular TV show pinks, in that the cars will be handicapped at the starting line but it will be first one to the finish line wins.  Further details will be given at the first US Army street legal race and those thereafter.   We will introduce the racing format at US Army street legal events before the June 22nd event to familiarize competitors with the format.  As part of the deal, the US Army will be setting up displays on the weekends of the street legal series, including but not limited to interactive displays, computerized games and videos, the US Army race vehicle show cars, and lots of giveaways from t-shirts up to Tony Schumacher signed giveaways. This is going to prove to be a very big deal, and we look forward to working with the US Army, the Army soldiers, and other details of this deal!  Thanks to the Charleston recruiting office for helping Cathy and I put this deal together.

Attention Racers Fans and Sponsors

It is after much debate, and speaking with some of the current racers in the Motorcycle class and some others who are now interested in racing with them, that I feel that we have to make a change in the bike class.  Beginning May 13th, we are going to allow 4 Wheelers and Scooters to compete in the Motorcycle class.  All riders will still have to maintain and have the proper safety gear, regardless of how slow/fast that the "Bike" runs.  Gloves, helmet and leather jacket are still required, even for the slower vehicles.

Hoch Street Radial Series Race

Charlie Lutz was the Winner of the First race in the Heads Up Hoch Street Radial Series on April 23. Charlie defeated Willie Benner to take the early points lead in the 5 race series to be contested this year at CCD.  A total of 8 cars signed up for the event, and the cars ranged from Jeff Jones on the Pole with a qualifying time of 8:08, and Doug Brozio on the bottom at 9:06.  Lutz was #4 on the ladder, and Benner was #6, so the cars all made up a very tight field.  The next Hoch Street Radial Series Race will be under the lights on Saturday, June 2nd.

Attention Racers, Fans and Sponsors

Just a quick note to say thanks to all of you who have patiently waited out the weather of April and got the chance to come out this beautiful weekend and enjoy our racetrack.   We had a very nice turnout for the Saturday Test-N-Tune, and Sundays Grand Opening provided a very improved and promising car count and spectator count for the weekend appears to be up as well.   Cathy and I want to express the weekend went well, but we also need to improve some areas of efficiency on our side and we are going to address them this week.  We look forward to seeing all of you again next week or in the future.
