Question: I have a Chevy S-10 that I’m building to go E.T. Racing at my local NHRA track. I think it will run
in the low 11-second range and I know it will need a roll bar. It has the original floor and firewall. My
question is can I put the roll bar on 6” X 6” plates welded to the floor?
Roll Bar Ronnie
Answer: No, all vehicles with OEM frame, such as an S-10 must have 1 ¾” roll bar welded or bolted to frame;
also the installation of frame connectors on unibody cars does not constitute a frame. (Posted

Drivers Emergency Plan
Parts of this article are taken from an article
written by track operator and drag racer Royce Miller, Maryland International Dragway
Imagine you are approaching the finish line at a high rate of speed when all of a sudden your motor expires and
you have 2 gallons of oil under your tires, and on top of that, a piece of connecting rod cuts a brake line. You
push on the brake pedal and there is no stopping this freight train. WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
Do good drivers act solely from instinct or by the seat of their pants? Do others simply panic
because they don't know what to do? After a serious accident there is always the talk about "shoulda, woulda,
coulda," and then everyone has an opinion on what happened. But no one really knows how he or she will act in a
crisis until they are faced with it. Drivers need an emergency plan! Regardless of how fast your
car or motorcycle is, you need to run through your head the best options to stop your vehicle in all different
emergency situations. It is easier to quickly think back on what to do in a situation if you have thought it out
previously. If you have never seen the end of the track you are about to run on it is imperative
before you make a time run, go to the end of the track and look at the surrounding area and study the best plan
if you are in an emergency situation. Yes throttles do stick, brakes do fail, and parachutes do not always
deploy, and then what is the best thing to do? Thinking about different situations ahead of time will make
emergency decisions easier. If you have a parachute on your car, you should pull it on the first
time run of the day to make sure everything is in good working order. You would be very surprised how many
parachutes never get out of the pack. They are damp and wrinkled and may not blossom correctly if not properly
maintained. Don't hesitate to use your parachute; it is an important piece of safety equipment.
In case of a stuck throttle, always kill the ignition first, then pull your parachute and brake carefully. These
are a few points to get you thinking about what to do in your race car in the event of an emergency situation. (Posted

Question: I have purchased a complete Super Gas Willies and wanted to know what basic items I should check for
expiration dates before I take it to my local NHRA track for licensing runs?
Wilson’s Willies
Answer: When you go to an NHRA Member Track to do licensing runs the tech inspector will do a tech inspection
of your car. My process is to ask the driver for their NHRA license. Since you do not have one yet, they
should direct you on how to do your licensing runs. Next, SFI 16.1 seat belts should be within two years of
manufacture, SFI 31.1A, 31.2A, 41.1A and 41.2A helmets, chassis need an NHRA chassis tag within three years of
current month and SFI 27.1 window net must be within two years of manufacture. Other non-dated items will be

Question: I’m going to add a fire extinguisher in my 1971 Pinto Pro ET race car. What rules do I need to
follow?
Pinto Pete
Answer: A fire extinguisher in any race vehicle that is not required by rules to have an onboard fire system
is a great idea. A small fire on the return road can get out of control in a hurry. In the 2011 NHRA Rulebook
Section 20, page 35 talks about fire extinguishers. It is recommended that each contestant have a loaded,
serviceable fire extinguisher in their race car, available for immediate use. Dry chemical or CO2-type, 2
½-pound minimum size recommended. Must be mounted in a secure manner; use of flip-open-type clamps prohibited.

Question: We are preparing a dragster for Super Comp in early 2012. The question we have is, our transmission
case was SFI 4.1 certified and the tag punched out July 2006. The case is 5 years old and needs to be
re-certified, are we permitted to run a SFI 4.1 shield over the case?
Transmission Tony
Answer: You would be able to add an SFI 4.1 transmission shield over your expired aftermarket case and
it would be legal. The other thing to remember is that the aftermarket case was also SFI 30.1 flexplate shield
certified and you would need to now add a SFI 30.1 flexplate shield. (Posted

Question: I just wanted to pass along a reminder on the new roll-cage padding rule that went into effect as of
June 1, 2011.
Roll Cage Ritchie

effect June 1. Let’s see if we can get racers into compliance with this rule. In the 2011 NHRA Rulebook on
page 5 of the E.T. Section 4A and in the General Regulations Section 20, page 20 it states “ Beginning June 1,
2011, roll-cage padding meeting SFI Spec 45.1 mandatory on any vehicle running 9.99 (6.39 1/8-mile) and

Question: I’m finishing my Top Dragster and when I take it
out it should run 7.0 @ 190 mph. My racing buddies said I’m good with a single parachute and without a head &
neck restraint for now. When would dual chutes and a head & neck restraint be required?
Top Dragster Denny
Answer:
When looking at the 2011 NHRA Rulebook the Top
Dragster class builds off of the Top Sportsman class. T/D rules on parachute are silent so looking at the T/S
parachute rules on page 4 if running 200 mph dual parachutes are required. In T/D on page 9 an SFI 38.1 head
and neck restraint is required if running 200 mph or faster. Both T/S & T/D will require an SFI 38.1 head &
neck restraint for all competitors starting 1/1/2012. (Posted

Question: I have a Super Pro Dragster that I recently purchased and I'm getting ready to race at my local NHRA
track. Looking at the wiring on this dragster it has an ignition wire hooked to the delay box. There
is not a tack in the car so I would assume that he used the delay box like a tach. I didn't think this was
legal?
Delay Box Dan
Answer: You are correct. In the 2011 NHRA rulebook, Section 4A, Super Pro, Page 7, ignition, it
states "No other wiring shall be connected directly or indirectly between any other part of the ignition system
and the delay box/device. All wiring associated with the ignition system must be full visible, labeled and

Question: My Super Pro Car runs 9.50 @ 144 mph in the 1/4 mile and my local NHRA Tech Inspector said I
would need to have a parachute on my car before I come back and run again. He said if you run quicker than
9.99 you need a parachute. Is that correct?
Parachute Pete
Answer: Looking in the 2011 NHRA Rulebook in Section 4A, Super Pro, page 4, Parachute it states
"Mandatory on any car that runs 150 mph or faster". You need to contact the track in question and ask if
their rules are written above and beyond the 2011 NHRA Rulebook to require a parachute at 9.99 or quicker even
if slower than 150 mph. If written and posted that way then you would need to follow the track rules. (Posted

compartment?
Laptop Larry
Answer: You are correct. There was a 2011 NHRA Rule Amendment as of December 6, 2010 on
www.nhra.com The 2011 Rule Amendment is in section 20, page 34, Support
Group: 9, second paragraph. It should read: During NHRA competition, a portable computer (e.g., laptop, PDA,
Palm Pilot, programmer, etc.) must be securely mounted when located in driver’s compartment at any point beyond
the staging area ready line. All functions or values must be pre-set prior to this point. (Posted

Question: What kind of safety rules do I need to follow with my nitrous bottle?
Nitrous Nettie
Answer: See the following nitrous bottle safety article written by Mike Thermos at Nitrous Supply.
Also be aware that a nitrous bottle in the driver's compartment must have a relief valve and vented outside
the drivers compartment. Commercially available, thermostatically controlled, blanket-type warmer accepted

Nitrous has been used in our industry for more than 30yrs. During that time, there have been plenty of
magazine articles on how to use it, types of kits available, new products, dyno tested results, etc. But
the one thing that hasn't been discussed as often is nitrous safety. So here are some tips on the safety
issues involving Nitrous Oxide.
Lets start with the "aluminum" nitrous bottle included in the most of the kits you see on the market today.
There are several sizes and capacity aluminum bottles available. Bottles are rated by how much nitrous
they hold in terms of weight-generally in size ranging from 10 ounce to 50 pound capacity bottles. The
most common capacity (sometimes referred to as "size") bottle is 10 pounds. So lets start here.
On the label you see on the face of the nitrous bottle is the "TARE" weight, which designates the empty weight
of the bottle and valve without the nitrous oxide. The weight of a bottle valve assembly can also vary
up to and extra pound, depending on the manufacturer. You will also see that the label will show the total
weight of the bottle when full (filled to rated capacity). This is very important, in that overfilling
a bottle, although possible, can have extremely bad consequence. A bottle is designed to be filled to
68 percent of its capacity and must have an "air bubble" of 32 percent to allow for expansion of the nitrous
when it gets warm. Speaking of temperature, when nitrous is discharged out of the bottle, it will be at minus
127 degrees and will freeze burn you almost immediately. Care should be taken to wear gloves and goggles
whenever filling a nitrous bottle. Never put an open flame on the bottle to bring up the pressure.
Doing so will begin to "anneal" the aluminum bottle, altering the microstructure of the material and causing
changes in properties such as strength, hardness and ductility, If the integrity of the bottle is compromised
by using an open flame, it is very possible to blow-up the bottle.

Question: I’m having trouble deciphering what the punched out holes mean on my NHRA chassis
tag. The car that I purchased is a 1969 Nova that has a roll cage like you see in the NHRA Rulebook and
it also has a funny car cage installed. The blue/silver NHRA chassis tag is punched out 8.50 & Slower
and at the bottom N/A. Along the left side punched out 09 and along the top 7. What does it all
mean?
Chassis Tag Chuck
Answer: Chassis Tag Chuck, The
punched out dates along the left side and the top show that your car passed NHRA inspection in the 7th month
(July) of 2009 and would expire in three years on July 31 2012. The punch out of 8.50 & Slower and the
N/A shows that it meets NHRA full-bodied spec that you see in the NHRA Rulebook. The Funny car cage by
itself doesn't let your car run under 8.50 in the 1/4 mile. The SFI 25.4 or 25.5 spec for ET of 8.49 down
to 7.50 does require a Funny car cage and numerous other chassis items before you can upgrade to either of those
SFI specs.

Question: At last Friday’s test & tune my Super Street Turbocharged Mustang ran 10.20
at 140 mph and I was not allowed to make any more runs unless I ran 135 mph or slower. I thought if I ran 10.00
or slower in the 1/4-mile then mph was not a factor?
140 Gordy
Answer: 140 Gordy, in the 2011 NHRA
Rulebook in Section 7 Super Street, page 1, Designation, third paragraph, it states “Any vehicle running faster
than 135 mph must meet minimum requirements for 9.99-second vehicles.” This means if you run quicker than 135
mph you must meet the requirements of NHRA chassis inspection, if automatic transmission a SFI 4.1 transmission
shield, 30.1 flex plate shield & 29.1 flex plate. Also, NHRA license, Snell or SFI full-face helmet, SFI 3.2A/5
jacket and pants, SFI 3.3/1 gloves & neck collar. The same rules would apply if running E.T. bracket racing.

Question: I heard that in 2011 I will need an engine diaper on my 1969 Super Pro Camaro to run at
my local NHRA Track.
Diaper Dan
Answer: Diaper Dan, I’m getting a number of phone calls on the requirements of an oil-retention device
for ET Bracket Racing. In the 2011 NHRA Rulebook if you are running in ET Bracket Racing you are not required
to have an oil-retention device as long as you are not running quicker than 7.50 in the 1/4-mile or 4.50 in
the 1/8-mile. You need to check with your local NHRA Track to see if their rules require any type of oil-retention
device, there are a number of tracks that do require oil-containment if running quicker than 9.99 in the 1/4-mile
or 6.40 in the 1/8-mile before you can run. So again, make sure you check with your local track. DRE is a proud

Question: One of my racing buddies said he heard that I would need to replace my roll-cage padding
before I race in 2011. Is this correct?
Answer: In the 2011 NHRA Rulebook on page 5 of section 4A, E.T. Handicap Racing, Roll-Cage Padding it
states “Beginning June 1, 2011, roll-cage padding meeting SFI Spec 45.1 mandatory on any vehicle running 9.99
(*6.39) and quicker. Padding must be used anywhere driver’s helmet may come in contact with roll-cage components.”
This not only applies to E.T. Handicap Racing but to any class or vehicle that runs 9.99 (*6.39) or quicker.
Looking at a racing parts catalog you can purchase a 3-foot piece of SFI Spec 45.1 Roll-Cage Padding for under
$20.
